Columbus State University is offering a new leadership and specialty training program for high school students this summer.

While the other summer programs often concentrate on extending the material already learned in a classroom environment, the Career Academy will allow each participant to enter a research area of particular interest that may not be available in high school. Each participant will master a subject area while also assembling a portfolio that can be used for educational or vocational enhancement. >p> The program provides instruction in architecture, computer applications, primary education, forensics, environmental science,business entrepreneurship and technological communications. Students will come to campus on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., June 10-28.

'The purpose for this summer education program is to provide an educational opportunity that will enable each participant to demonstrate and learn leadership qualities while researching an area that will prepare him/her to enter the work force or higher education with the necessary skills to achieve academic and personal potential,' said Career Academy Director, Candyss Bryant. 'We are pleased to have the resources to bring this opportunity to high school students in our region.'

The program is open to eligible 9th and 10th grade students in Muscogee, Harris and Stewart-Quitman counties and Phenix City. Thirteen students in the program will fill the roles of student directors and student leaders, based on nominations and on 'what you can do for the Career Academy,' Bryant said.

Funding for the academy comes from a state of Georgia School-to-Work federally funded grant, implemented through the Greater Chattahoochee Education-to-Career Partnership.

'The Career Academy provides an opportunity for students to become leaders or to exhibit their leadership qualities,' said Michael Daniels, director of CSU's Office of Community Development.

Student participants are selected based on their submitted application, quality of essay provided and school recommendations.
