Professor Dawson Named Outstanding Teacher of Writing Winner

Columbus State University English Professor Mary Dawson has won the 2019-2020 CSU Outstanding Teacher of Writing Award. The Academic Center for Tutoring coordinates the Outstanding Teacher of Writing Award, which has been awarded for over a decade and is a part of the first QEP initiative, Writing the Solution. The award is aimed at encouraging faculty, especially those teaching core courses in General Education, to use writing across the curriculum as a best practice for student engagement and learning.

One nomination demonstrates how Professor Dawson supports this aim, stating, "This teacher taught me how to write thoughtful, in-depth essays with ease. At the beginning of the course I had never written more than a two page essay. However, by the end, I learned how to write a twelve page one."

Another explains, "She shows great level of hard work by breaking down everything we need to be taught along with fun homework and activities to improve our writing.”
