Scanlon_GriffinCOLUMBUS, Ga. — Two Columbus State University students, guided by two CSU chemistry professors, have had an article published in a recent issue of the Journal of Chemical Education.

The article by students Christopher Scanlon and Kameron Griffin and professors Zewdu Gebeyehu and Rajeev B. Dabke details an undergraduate lab experiment that highlights a new approach to analyzing dietary supplement tablets containing iron and Vitamin C.

Scanlon, a senior chemistry major from Pine Mountain Valley, won CSU’s Excellence in Research – Chemistry Award during CSU’s annual Scholastic Honors Convocation in April. He currently holds a Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship from the U.S. Department of Energy at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

Griffin, a senior chemistry major from Columbus, is a student in CSU’s Honors College and served last year as president of its student group, Honoris Causa. She’s also one of three students who helped organize Cougarthon 2014, a campus-wide fundraising effort that resulted in $2,500 for the American Cancer Society in late April.

Both Gebeyehu, a professor of chemistry, and Dabke, an associate professor of chemistry, joined Columbus State in 2002.

The Journal of Chemical Education is published by the American Chemical Society, which approved national accreditation for CSU’s Department of Chemistry in 2013.Scanlon gave a poster presentation related to the experiment at the 245th ACS National Meeting and Exposition in New Orleans in spring 2013.
