TEDxColumbusStateU seeks local storytellers to share ‘ideas worth spreading’
October 15, 2026

Do you have an “idea worth spreading”? Columbus State University is inviting bold thinkers, storytellers and innovators to take the stage at TEDxColumbusStateU, returning to the Riverside Theater on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2027. The event builds on the success of the inaugural TEDxColumbusStateU, held in January 2026, which drew more than 300 people.
Organizers are seeking six speakers for this high-profile event. Columbus State students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to apply, along with local high school students and members of the broader regional community.
This year’s event explores “Grey Matter—The Space Between,” the complex intersection of technology, connection and human experience.
“As technology continues to reshape society, TEDxColumbusStateU will explore a critical
question: How will we choose to remain human within it?” explained Shana Young (pictured), the university’s associate vice president for community engagement. “Selected
speakers will step into a space designed to challenge perspectives, spark meaningful
conversations and inspire action across the region.”
How to appear onstage
Applying to speak offers local changemakers a platform to elevate their ideas and join a community of dreamers and doers.
Applications must be submitted online by 5 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 6, using the online speaker application. Applicants must include the title and summary of their proposed talk, along with a video sample.
Young said talks should fall into one or more TEDx categories:
- The big idea: a focus on one or two very strong points and why they matter.
- The tech demo: an onstage look at some clever invention that the speaker was a part of creating.
- The performance: music, dance, magic, puppetry or some other performance to captivate your audience.
- The artist’s statement: artists showcase their art and explain the meaning and process behind what they create.
- The “dazzle with wonder”: focus mainly on the amazement of science and discovery.
- The small idea: talks not about one big, world-changing idea, but instead a very engaging take on an interesting topic.
- The “issue” talk: expose your audience to an issue that they may not otherwise know much about.
Applicants will learn in mid-November whether they’ve been selected. Before the Jan. 14 event, selected speakers will take part in coaching and practice sessions to refine their talks and prepare them for the TEDx format. Examples of past TEDxColumbusStateU talks are on the event’s website.
