Prepared Remarks by Tom Hackett, CSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs:

GOOD AFTERNOON.  CONGRESSMAN WESTMORELAND, PRESIDENT MESCON, DR. TICKNOR, ESTEEMED FACULTY COLLEAGUES, AND GUESTS, IT IS MY DISTINCT PLEASURE TO BE HERE WITH YOU THIS AFTERNOON AS WE WELCOME CANDIDATES FOR COLUMBUS STATE HONORS AND SERVANT LEADERSHIP.  TODAY, I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING ACCOMPLISHED YOUNG PEOPLE FROM  ALL OVER THE SOUTHEAST WHO HAVE MADE COLUMBUS STATE UNIVERSITY THEIR FIRST CHOICE.  AMONG THESE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE STUDENTS WHO ARE TOPS IN THEIR CLASS, LEADERS IN THEIR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES, YOUNG PLEOPLE WITH TREMENDOUS ENERGY AND DRIVE, INTELLECT AND CREATIVITY. I HAVE BEEN AS IMPRESSED WITH THEM AS I HAVE BEEN WITH THE UNIFORMLY HIGH CALIBER OF FACULTY CANDIDATES I HAVE INTERVIEWED OVER THE LAST FEW WEEKS. AMONG CANDIDATES FOR FACULTY POSITIONS HAVE BEEN ACCOMPLISHED RESEARCHERS IN SCIENCE, HIGHLY PUBLISHED SCHOLARS, AND LEADERS IN THEIR FIELDS.  CLEARLY, COLUMBUS STATE IS AN INSTITUTION TAKING ITS PLACE AMONG THE GREAT INSTITUTIONS OF THIS STATE AND THE SOUTHEAST.

MY PURPOSE HERE TODAY IS TO MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT ON BEHALF OF THE FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY ON WHAT I THINK IS A TRULY HISTORIC OCCASION.  THE FACULTY HAS RECOMMENDED, AND THE PRESIDENT HAS APPROVED, THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN HONORS COLLEGE AT COLUMBUS STATE UNIVERSITY, TO BEGIN FALL 2014.  AS YOU KNOW, COLUMBUS STATE HAS HAD AN HONORS PROGRAM FOR YEARS.  HOWEVER, THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN HONORS COLLEGE AND THE SUPPORT OF THAT COLLEGE DEMONSTRATES THE COMMITMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY TO ATTRACTING THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST OF STUDENTS, STUDENTS WHO WILL BE THE RESEARCHERS, THE THINKERS, THE ARTISTS, THE CREATORS OF TOMORROW.  IN THE SAME WAY THAT THE SERVANT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM AND THE COMPETITIVE PRE-MED PROGRAM DEMONSTRATE THE UNIVERSITY’S STRATEGIC FOCUS ON LEADING IN THE CREATION OF IDEAS, COLUMBUS STATE’S  COMMITMENT TO THIS NEW HONORS COLLEGE AND THE PROGRAMMATIC INNOVATIONS THAT ARE INVOLVED WILL ATTRACT THE THOUGHT LEADERS OF THE FUTURE.

I HAVE ASKED DR. CINDY TICKNOR TO SERVE IN THE ROLE OF INTERIM DEAN OF THE HONORS COLLEGE AS WE WORK TOWARD A FALL START DATE AND AM DELIGHTED TO REPORT THAT SHE HAS ACCEPTED THAT CHARGE.  DR. TICKNOR, WE ALL OWE YOU A HUGE DEBT OF GRATITUDE FOR YOUR DEDICATION TO LEADING US TO THIS POINT AND FOR YOUR COMMITMENT TO MOVING US FORWARD.

TO OUR FACULTY COLLEAGUES, THE HONORS PROGRAM COMMITTEE, AND THE FACULTY SENATE, I OFFER YOU MY PERSONAL APPRECIATION AS A FACULTY MEMBER, TWO TIME GRADUATE, AND CSU PARENT.  IT IS TRULY AN EXCITING TIME FOR THIS INSTITUTION.  TO DR. TIM MESCON, THE INSTITUTION OWES A DEBT OF THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THIS NEW COLLEGE.  FINALLY, TO OUR TRUSTEES AND THE UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT TEAM, THANK YOU FOR YOUR DEMONSTRATION OF INTERST AND SUPPORT FOR THE HONORS COLLEGE.  THE TIME IS RIGHT TO CARRY OUT THE VISION.

SHORTLY, YOU WILL HEAR FROM TIM MONEY, A LONG TIME SUPPORTER OF COLUMBUS STATE UNIVERSITY. BUT BEFORE TIM BRINGS YOU GREETINGS AND REMARKS, IT’S MY PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE CONGRESSMAN LYNN WESTMORELAND.  I FIRST MET THE CONGRESSMAN DURING A TRIP TO DC WHERE HE AND HIS STAFF TOOK THE TIME TO MEET WITH A GROUP OF FACULTY FROM COLUMBUS STATE.
