Sad News to Report: English Professor Joe Francavilla Has Passed Away

Friends,

I am sorry to be sharing the sad news that retired professor Joe Francavilla passed away this week.  Many of you knew Joe as a committed professor of English who taught at Columbus State University for 27 years and who, in fact, was teaching a course here this semester.

Joe was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of film, particularly film noir (for many years he taught a very popular course on film), and whose creativity extended to being a fine jazz guitarist and a true lover of jazz music.  I was fortunate to have worked with him on the Early Mentoring program he coordinated for students majoring in Secondary English Education.  Colleagues in the Department of English and in the College of Education and Health Professions met with students who presented their writing and discussed the process of writing with those of us serving on a panel.  This program made a huge difference to those students who were preparing to teach English.

He is survived by his brother Vince.  Joe will certainly be missed by his many students, colleagues, and friends.

Sincerely,

Tom
