Space Science Center to Debut Full-Dome, In-House Production
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Columbus State University’s Coca-Cola Space Science Center is debuting its first in-house, full-dome production as part of its holiday schedule through Jan. 2.
The center’s Omnisphere Theatre will show the popular children’s feature In My Backyard, re-produced for a full-dome viewing experience, at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday. The same show times will apply through the holidays, as the center will be open Dec. 21-23, Dec. 28-30 and Jan. 2.
Families can experience the 35-minute exploration of the seasons and constellations from a simulated backyard setting in a seamless, high definition 360-degree view. “It’s pretty amazing when you first experience a full-dome show, said Omnisphere Theatre Director Lance Tankersley. “You feel as though you’re right in the middle of the action.”
With its state-of-the-art digital planetarium in place, CSU recently purchased the script, soundtrack and music rights for In My Backyard from the Calgary Science Center. “This is our first full-dome production,” Tankersley said. “We worked through the expected technical glitches and difficulties to a point where we’re now prepared to produce and market a show every year or 18 months.”
Furthermore, the space science center’s full-dome production capability will provide a source of revenue for CSU and the center. Potential buyers of the new In My Backyard and subsequent shows include about 250 full dome or full-immersion theatre venues across North America, plus additional such venues worldwide. Tankersley said the future shows will be education-oriented and in line with national and state standards for science teaching.
Regarding In My Backyard, Tankersley credited Omnisphere Theatre Producer Christiana Unaeze for creating much of the animation and content in leading the project. Following the holiday showings, the feature will remain in the regular lineup of shows and be available for school or group bookings.
