Ticket Deadline May 6 for President’s Recognition Banquet

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Columbus State University’s annual President’s Recognition Banquet was designed to recognize leading alumni and supporters of CSU. This year, it will be a community-wide celebration of the university’s 50th anniversary and forthcoming retirement of President Frank Brown.

CSU will stage the event on Tuesday, May 13 in the Columbus Georgia Convention and Trade Center, 1000 Bay Ave., Columbus. A reception, with cash bar, starts at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 and the presentation of the Thomas Y. Whitley Distinguished Alumnus Award, named in honor of the university’s first president.

Reservations are $40 per person and available through Tuesday, May 6 by calling 706-565-4100 or visiting http://www.colstate.edu/50years and using a credit card to purchase online.

“This year’s banquet presents a special opportunity for community members to come together and pay tribute to Dr. Brown,” said CSU Alumni Association Executive Director Ray Lakes, chair of the banquet committee. “The past 20 years of (Brown’s) leadership has positioned CSU as an educational, cultural and economically vital component of the surrounding region and represents the most prosperous period of this institution’s history.”

The banquet also represents the third of four designated events to commemorate CSU’s 50th anniversary, following a Jan. 24 opening celebration and an April 4-5 open house-homecoming. The concluding event is a 50th Anniversary Academic Convocation on Sept. 25 featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Brown announced his retirement, effective June 30, to a CSU faculty and staff gathering in August in the same facility as the May 13 banquet. His remarks, during the university’s annual welcome-back luncheon and service awards ceremony, drew a 30-second standing ovation.

Brown, the longest-serving president in the University System of Georgia, has been at CSU since 1981 and has been president since Jan. 14, 1988.
